HOPE International's mandate is to provide alternative technological and educational support to people in developing countries where environmental, economic and / or social circumstances have interfered with the ability of local communities to sustain themselves using traditional methods.

HOPE is initiating projects in Bonke Woreda (region), a remote district in the Gamo Gofa, located in the south-west part of Ethiopia. Access to water is a critical issue. Clean, or improved sources of water stand at a paltry 14.4%. The majority of the population use ponds, rivers, and unprotected springs as their primary source of water, travelling up to an hour to access water, which is often contaminated. All communities HOPE will be working with currently have inadequate water supplies.

HOPE Seeks to Supply Water Where it is in Demand

With over 90% of the population now having access to a clean, safe water supply in the Derashe regions of Ethiopia, HOPE is turning its attention to a new project in the Bonke Woreda, where a sustainable water supply is much needed.
For the last few years, the main focus of HOPE's work in Ethiopia has been in Derashe. When we started in Derashe access to water was around 7% of the population. Now it is nearly 84%, and this will rise again to over 90 % of the population once we finish the current phase. Not only has this changed the lives of those living in Derashe, but it also means that we are now able to focus on a new area. Here, Bereket Gebretsion, program manager of HOPE International Development Agency in Ethiopia, reveals the vision for Bonke Woreda, the latest region earmarked for intervention by HOPE UK.

The global threat of AIDS is particularly prevalent in Africa. Ethiopia is one of the most highly AIDS affected countries in the world, as well as one of the poorest - a devastating combination. As well as adults who have contracted HIV, the children who are orphaned because of it are also deeply affected by AIDS. Many children are born with HIV, or have lost their parents to the disease. HOPE is working with many women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. By empowering the poor to break out of poverty, they have a chance at a life that is safe and secure.
