Going the Extra Mile
  - HOPE (UK)

This May, Mike Parkin is to raise much needed funds to rebuild and refurbish the Bussa Killa School in Ethiopia.

This May, 59 year old Mike Parkin is setting out on a sponsored bike ride of some 1500 miles, eventually taking him from Land’s End to John O’ Groats. That’s an admirable aspiration in its own right. But Mike is going to go the extra mile and raise much needed funds to rebuild and refurbish the Bussa Killa School in Ethiopia.

The Bussa Killa School was established in 1976. It currently has about 700 pupils aged 7 to 17. Whilst the school is well established, it has problems that require major investment. Built 31 years ago the main building is now badly in need of renovation. What’s more, there are no toilets for pupils, the classrooms are overcrowded with only limited facilities, and pupils have access to very few books.

Though the Project fund is being managed by Hope International Development Agency, Mike will actually be raising the money for The James Project (Kendal College), set up in memory of James Cawthorn to raise funds to provide education for youngsters living in a rural community in the Derashe Special Woreda region of Southern Ethiopia.

Mike is aiming to start his ride at Land’s End on Monday 26th May and finish at John O’ Groats around the 20th June and hopes to raise around £3000. So, if you’d like to support Mike, you can send donations directly to HOPE UK, but please indicate clearly that they are for Mike’s efforts.
