Are you looking for worthwhile, part-time and flexible work which can make a difference to the lives of the poorest?

Are you a self-starter, able to share a vision and generate support for our work?

Can you build relationships with future donors and motivate current supporters?

If so, you could be the person HOPE UK is looking for.  We are a small UK charity which raises money to bring hope and change lives for the better in Southern Ethiopia. We work with marginalised communities to meet essential needs such as water and sanitation.  Motivated by a desire for justice, a belief in dignity and equality for all, plus a recognition that we are stewards of God’s creation, we want to make a difference.  Do you?

About Us

HOPE International Development Agency has been working in Ethiopia for over 40 years.  The charity was started in response to the famine in Ethiopia by a group of Canadians who were motivated to help by their Christian faith.  Over the years, HOPE’s work in Ethiopia has evolved to focus on water and sanitation projects because access to clean water reduces disease and water collection time, creating transformational change in health, education, household income and gender equality. It also enhances resilience through environmental protection and food security measures. Crucially, HOPE is committed to sustainable projects that involve community participation and ownership.

HOPE UK was started in 2002 as a fundraising partner to HOPE’s development work in Ethiopia.  which focuses on water, sanitation, livelihood skills and environmental protection projects.  We currently have one part-time fundraiser based in Bristol and five (volunteer) Trustees based in various areas of Britain and our income has grown steadily in recent years.

As a small UK charity, we are proud of our strong relationships with our donors and supporters, as well as with our implementing partner HOPE Ethiopia, which is entirely run by Ethiopian Nationals. We are an agile organisation that encourages new ideas and embraces a diverse array of fundraising activities.  We also benefit from being part of the larger HOPE family with the support and guidance from our parent organisation HOPE Canada and our HOPE partners in other countries (e.g. HOPE Japan and HOPE USA).

Goals

HOPE’s development projects in Ethiopia have become more comprehensive in scope, moved into increasingly remote and isolated areas and recently faced the huge challenge of inflation, thus becoming more expensive to implement.  We therefore aim to grow HOPE’s profile in the UK and increase our income so we can reach more people in need.  Hiring an additional HOPE UK Fundraiser will help us reach this goal. Pursuing fundraising from corporates, events, community groups and/or grant writing are all possibilities as part of the role.

The Role

1.     You could fundraise for HOPE’s work through a variety of different means – running events, enabling sponsored activities, developing relationships with corporates and initiating community links with schools, churches and others, with a view to generating more one-off and regular donors.

 2.     You could manage volunteers and contact with donors, ideally working with supporters to organise events and fundraisers, and handle the follow up.

 3.     You will work closely with HOPE’s existing Fundraiser, providing support, sharing ideas and working as a team to raise funds for HOPE.

 4.     Fundraising guidance will be provided by HOPE’s existing fundraiser, including suggestions for building on HOPE UK’s current fundraising activities and experience. You will be encouraged to develop these activities in your own locality as well as proposing and researching new ideas or opportunities.  There will also be opportunities to participate in external training and networking opportunities run by experts and peers in the charity and international development sectors.

5.     You will liaise as appropriate with HOPE UK’s Trustees, to whom you will ultimately be accountable, with HOPE’s existing Fundraiser acting as your immediate line manager.

6.     6 hours per week, based at home, at £12.50 per hour.
